Il Ministry of Tourism (MiTur) has officially launched a new strategic service on the Tourism Digital Hub: it's called “SmartTourism Digital ESG Check”.
Available within the Operators Portal Italia.it, this tool was created with a clear objective: to guide Italian accommodation facilities (especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises) in measuring their own digital maturity and ESG sustainability (Environmental, Social, Governance).
Funded under Mission 1, Component 3, Investment 4.1 of the PNRR, the service is completely free and was developed in collaboration with the innovative startup ESG Impact.
But why should a hotel, resort, or B&B take this self-assessment test right away? Let's find out how it works and the practical benefits for your hotel business.
What is the SmartTourism Digital ESG Check and what is it for?
Topics index
Lo SmartTourism Digital ESG Check It is a guided self-assessment process. It is not a bureaucratic requirement or an inspection, but a free business intelligence tool Designed to give hoteliers a clear and immediate "snapshot" of their market positioning with respect to two fundamental pillars for today's competitiveness:
Sustainability (ESG): It measures the structure's environmental impact (waste management, energy, water), social factors (employee well-being, connection with the local area), and management transparency (governance).
Digital maturity: Analyzes the effectiveness of internal and external digitalization processes, from the use of management software (PMS, CRS) to web promotion strategies and integration with the national digital ecosystem.
How does self-assessment work on the Italian Operators Portal?
The calculation algorithm, developed by ESG Impact, has been calibrated to simplify access to complex topics as much as possible, making them intuitive even for those without specific technical skills.

Why checking is beneficial for your accommodation: 4 competitive advantages
As underlined by the founder of ESG Impact, Gianni Muraca, the competitiveness of tourism inevitably depends on integrating these models into business processes. Here are the concrete advantages for hotel management:
Savings on consulting costs: A digital sustainability and efficiency analysis performed by external professionals can cost thousands of euros. This public tool offers a solid starting point at no cost.
Reputational and marketing advantage: Obtaining a measurement of your ESG indicators allows you to transparently communicate your green commitment to a segment of the market (especially international and high-spending) that is increasingly attentive to eco-tourism.
Ease of access to bank credit: Credit institutions now assess "ESG risk" before granting mortgages or loans. Demonstrating a digital and environmental monitoring program improves the institution's bank rating.
Prerequisite for future calls for tenders and incentives: With the PNRR funds still hot and the new European directives in place, it's highly likely that upcoming regional and national tourism-related calls will require or reward facilities that have completed the maturity checks on the national portal.
The tourism of the future is digital and sustainable
The launch of the SmartTourism Digital ESG Check The Ministry of Tourism confirms that the transition is no longer an option, but a necessity in order not to be cut off from the market.
For hotel management, taking advantage of this free opportunity within the Tourism Digital Hub means stopping guesswork and starting to plan for solid, efficient, and sustainable growth.
