PIDMed's free program supports tourism MSMEs in their digital transformation. For hotels and accommodation facilities, online presence, reputation, AI, and the ability to build stronger relationships with the local community are key.

For the hotel industry, digital transformation is no longer a future prospect.

    It's already underway.

65 % of travellers book their holidays online , and the percentage rises to 79% among Generation Z. Furthermore, according to data from the Visit Italy Tourism Observatory reported in the Turismo 5.0 project, one in three tourists already uses artificial intelligence in their travel choices.

These are numbers that profoundly change the relationship between accommodation facilities and potential guests.

    Tourism 5.0 is born

To support businesses in this transformation, Tourism 5.0 is arriving , the program promoted by PIDMed – Punto Impresa Digitale Mediterraneo, a structure of the Salerno Chamber of Commerce dedicated to digital innovation and created in partnership with the University of Naples Federico II.

The initiative, developed as part of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy's National Industry 4.0 Plan, provides Italian SMEs with a free ebook, video lessons, and operational tools.

The goal is to support companies through a digital transformation capable of simultaneously addressing competitiveness and sustainability.

The customer chooses the hotel online

For a hospitality facility, the first contact with the guest increasingly occurs before booking.

The potential customer searches for a destination, compares accommodations, consults reviews, looks at photographs, checks services and evaluates alternatives.

For this reason, digital presence and online reputation are among the issues directly addressed by the Tourism 5.0 program.

Anyone who doesn't properly manage these spaces risks being invisible right when the traveler is deciding where to stay.

Artificial intelligence enters the choice process

The data that one in three travellers already uses AI tools represents a further evolution.

Today, tourists can ask a digital assistant which destination to choose, where to stay, or what experiences to enjoy.

The digital transformation of the hotel industry therefore concerns not only reservations and presence on platforms, but the entire information ecosystem in which the property is presented.

It is no coincidence that the ebook Tourism 5.0 addresses, among other things, the topics of artificial intelligence, digital presence, and online reputation.

Platforms are important, but companies must maintain control

Among the eight levers of Tourism 5.0 is the strengthening of local micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.

The document underlines a central aspect: the problem is not using the platforms, but being governed by them.

This is a particularly significant issue in the hospitality sector.

Platforms represent important distribution and visibility tools, but the ability to build an autonomous digital presence becomes equally strategic for the future of the structures.

Hotels and the local area: an increasingly close relationship

Tourism 5.0, however, does not look at the accommodation facility as an isolated entity.

The entire model places the relationship between tourism and the territory at its centre.

Hospitality is interpreted as a pact, while the tourist is progressively considered a participating traveler , not just a consumer of services.

For hotels, this means being able to become a true connection point between guest and destination.

The quality of the experience depends not only on the room or the internal services, but also on the ability to connect the visitor with places, communities and local economies.

    Overtourism and deseasonalization

    Another issue concerns flow management.

Tourism 5.0 was also born as an “overtourism-proof” program.

Tourism growth can in fact cause excessive pressure on locations with limited carrying capacity.

Managing digital can instead mean better distributing demand, enhancing less crowded seasons, and promoting alternative locations or experiences.

For the hotel sector, deseasonalization can therefore become a tool for both sustainability and economic competitiveness.

A new idea of hotel sustainability

The program also invites us to go beyond a purely environmental reading of sustainability.

Sustainability, understood as regeneration, appears among the eight strategic levers.

Regeneration means producing more value than is consumed, linking tourism, deseasonalization, and quality of work.

From this perspective, the accommodation facility is an integral part of the economy and the community that surrounds it.

    The free ebook Tourism 5.0

The program offers the ebook “Tourism 5.0. Digital Transformation, Communities and Territories ,” with contributions from Alex Giordano, Stefania Escobar, Gabriele Granato, and Mara Normando.

This in-depth study is also aimed at hospitality professionals who want to understand how digital, AI, online reputation, and smart destinations are evolving.
