Pursuant to the new Radon Gas Law , no later than 90 days after its entry into force (16 July 2019), operators of public activities (including hotels and restaurants) were required to start measuring the level of radon gas concentration on an annual basis through two half-yearly integrations.

    Radon Law: workplaces

In Italy, the regulation of radon exposure in the workplace was introduced at the beginning of 2001 with the entry into force of Legislative Decree no. 241/00, which implemented Directive 96/29/Euratom , amending and integrating Legislative Decree 230/95.

To ensure uniform application of the regulations across the country, the Conference of Presidents of the Regions and Autonomous Provinces has approved the Guidelines for measuring radon concentrations in the air and in underground workplaces.

The Decree establishes that, if the average annual concentration of radon in the workplace exceeds the action level of 500 Bq/m3, the employer must implement remedial actions to reduce the radon concentration.

The employer does not have to take any remedial action if he demonstrates that he does not exceed the dose of 3 mSv/year , taking due account of the time spent in the workplace.

Campania: new law on radon for hospitality and hotel facilities

With the publication of Campania Regional Law no. 13-2019 in Regional Bulletin no. 40 of 16 July 2019, Campania has equipped itself with a tool that implements Euratom Directive 59/2013, setting the threshold limit at 300 Bq/m3 and 200 Bq/m3 for new buildings.

The transposition of the aforementioned Directive responds to the need to ensure maximum protection for workers and to resolve a significant problem that characterizes the Campania Region, where the average value of radon gas is almost six times that at national level.

From the analysis of the graph ( Data source: Radon.it ) the average radon value, at a national level, is 70 Bq/m3 compared to the value of approximately 400 Bq/m3.

Campania Regional Law 8 July 2019 n.13: reference limits of radon gas

The Campania Regional Law requires radon measurements for all places accessible to the public and for strategic buildings, including those used for education.

For basements, semi-basements and ground floor rooms of buildings other than strategic buildings and buildings open to the public, the reference limit level for concentration of radon gas activity in closed environments cannot exceed 300 Bq/m3.

For strategic buildings and buildings intended for education , the reference limit level for radon gas activity concentration cannot exceed 300 Bq/m3.
