For our Travel Life column , today we're giving the floor to Wanderlust Frenky . If you're a hotelier, follow his advice to improve your business.
Tell us about yourself and your business
I am Francesco Morelli, born in 1989, born and raised in Ischia, pearl of the Mediterranean and for me one of the most beautiful islands in the world. I am a dreamer, and my dreams run at full speed too. I still don't know what I'll do when I grow up but I've decided that I want to be happy. For me traveling represents happiness, the absolute and profound one.
Traveling is living, knowing, being free. Free to wake up watching the sun rise in Bali and watch it set on the Australian coasts. I love adventure, backpacking trips in contact with nature, but at the same time I love staying still and staring at the skyscrapers of big cities.
How did your business start?
My blog was born from an immense passion and almost like a need, that is, trying to tell what emotions you feel when treading on unknown lands. However, it was born in the worst period for tourism. The pandemic has brought the sector to its knees, but it has also allowed us to stop and dedicate ourselves to what makes us happiest.
And so, after a few months of hard work and nights in front of the PC, it was born Wanderlust Frenky. Why Wanderlust Frenky? Wanderlust: there is no better word to describe what burns inside me. Wanderlust is the irresistible desire to travel, explore, visit new places, discover new cultures, meet new people and meet new people. Wanderlust is the opposite of standing still. And I just don't know how to stay still.
frenky: Francesco has always been too long a name to pronounce, and so, since I was little, Frenky has always been my nickname. And today this nickname seems to reflect my energy, my enthusiasm.
What do travelers like today?
Today's travelers are very different from those of 20 years ago. Even if not everyone in Italy is ready yet, new travelers look to technology: quick check-in, perhaps with your smartphone, equally quick check-out. Speed and efficiency. This is what the new generations expect, accustomed to consuming information at the speed of light.
New Millennium travelers are social creatures, both online and offline. They are always connected with their friends, everywhere, sharing their vacation photos with thousands of friends on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok. More than the classic hotels, a young person looking for something special where the main word is “share” .
Hostels, those frequented by young people with backpacks on their shoulders and little money in their pockets, fully reflect this idea of travel. From the particular design that inspires photos for social media, to the common areas, up to the special event organized in the roof bar. The modern and conscious traveler demands one from his holiday full immersion in local culture, an authentic and engaging experience.
What advice do you give to hoteliers?
My advice is to adapt to changing times and to be constantly updated on travellers' needs. This results in a strong presence on social media.
For new travellers, what doesn't appear on social media might as well not exist.
The more present and active the hotel is on social media, the more it will be able to be recognized by travelers of the New Millennium.
The real-time sharing of information, images and videos encourages spontaneous word of mouth and often convinces new travelers to choose that hotel rather than another. It is important to offer comprehensive information, always up to date, on the hotel website and on social media, monitor reviews every day and respond to negative reviews as soon as possible.
Un active, present, efficient hotelier, will always make a good impression in the eyes of the new traveler. It is then essential to work on strategies that link back to your site in order to increase direct bookings.
Strategies for hoteliers to attract a greater number of customers or improve their visibility through an influencer
Influencer marketing is a very interesting and useful marketing method for the promotion and communication of destinations and tourism operators.
Influencers facilitate access to new potential tourists. An influencer's followers are in principle similar to his theme and have not necessarily already taken into consideration the destination or proposal.
The more specialized and thematic the influencer, the greater the probability that his followers will be attracted and interested in periodically receiving information and proposals via social media. This is a way for the destination to increase its contact base.
In the field of influencer marketing, particularly in travel, we must not only consider influencers, but also the so-called Ambassador.
The influencer is a person with a large community of followers, who follow him for his own reasons specific skills in the field. A brand or destination that wants to work with an influencer must convince him of the relevance of a collaboration, but often also pay him.
Instead, the Ambassador is a already acquired customer or tourist, satisfied with the products or services of the destination. Or it is a resident of the destination himself, who spontaneously promotes it on his own digital channels. For this reason he has a greater affinity with the destination, he recognizes himself in its values and this certainly facilitates collaboration.
A very important aspect, especially for those companies/structures that have not yet approached this way of doing tourism or are not ready, is that influencers and ambassadors they create quality content which can be used by the destination or facility on the various platforms.
In your experience, on what criteria do travelers choose an accommodation facility?
The criteria are multiple. The choice of online accommodation certainly depends on photographs: obviously the more well-kept the tourist location is, the more positively it will be perceived by the Web user, increasing the chances of converting him into a customer.
Obviously then perception must correspond to reality. The web is a glass palace and negative reviews will soon make you close. Another fundamental point: the reviews. Positive reviews and fair pricing are the ideal combination to increase the chances of a hotel being chosen by online users.
How can accommodation facilities collaborate with you to increase sales?
As I said before, it is important to know who to contact and how authentic and valuable the content produced is. At the moment I place myself among the nanoinfluencers. The power of nano/micro influencers is not based so much on having great notoriety, but on being able to gain good credibility in a specific niche of the public. To do this, they work on enhancing engagement and trust, building solid and long-lasting relationships all over the world. within a circle of enthusiasts who recognize in them reliable and knowledgeable personalities on a specific topic.
As in my case, we use social channels mainly to share our passions, and we do in an almost “disinterested” way, first of all, because we first believe in the product we are talking about and want to share it with the community. Through social channels I create stories that stimulate curiosity and interest in a specific destination.
Thanks to storytelling in fact, any message is perceived in a more authentic and emotional way, and is far more credible and persuasive than any other advertising action. I therefore produce impactful photos and videos for the destination to be published on the various social channels, articles for my blog or for the facility's website, aimed at indexing by search engines such as Google.
Today the trend of “new marketing” it is based on people and relationships and sees the emergence of figures who make the difference in terms of competence, real penetration and loyalty of their audience.
